Basement Finishing Costs

A lot of houses have unfinished basements or homeowners just use the space to store things that they sparingly use not realizing that a basement can add an additional living space which can definitely add value to the home. If you are seriously contemplating on finishing your basement or you’re just shopping around to see what will be the basement finishing costs, you need to have a finished plan. Planning carefully will save you tons of troubles in the future.

If you are not that creative and you have a lot of money to spare, you can hire a professional architect or a designer to draw plans for you. However, sometimes this is unnecessary because the basement is already structurally done. You can just browse for finished basement photos over the internet. A lot of them are free so don’t worry about paying extra for these. Should you decide to hire a professional designer, you’re looking at $300 to $1,000 depending on your preference’s complexity. A lot of contractors offer free design so you might want to include this with your options.

Make sure to include electrical, heating or plumbing materials to your basement finishing costs. What are the other things that comprise the cost? New carpeting, paint for your walls and ceilings, new drywall and ceiling, lights, door, windows (optional) and other finishing materials will run up the cost. You can ask your local home improvement store for a price list of all the things you need so you’ll have an idea how far you can go. You can always use the internet to search for prices. After detailing your plan, you can work on the other specifics of the project.

It’s better if you make a list what type of drapes, carpeting, paint and electrical fixtures you will be using. Base carpeting prices start around $15 per yard but they can cost as much as $120 per yard. If you’re not sure what quality you want and you are not comfortable spending too much, it’s always safe to go for standard builder grade quality. Once you are ready to specify the quality of your finishes, you can google them online or you can go to your local store.

The next step in estimating basement finishing costs is figuring out the cost for each separate item. For example, in my area, drywall is currently priced at $0.90 per square foot. If I multiply it with 480 square feet, my cost will be $432. If you are hiring a professional to do it for you, add about 30% to 40% for overhead and profit. After adding all the separate unit prices, you should have an idea what your finishing costs will be. The average cost for basement finishing is $15 to $35 per square foot but then again it will still depend on the materials used.

Helpful Finish Basement Ideas To Remodel Your Basement

The basement is probably the most flexible room in the house because you can pretty much convert it into anything you want. There are tons of finish basement ideas online and on magazines and oftentimes, homeowners get confused with what they want to use their basement for.

There are hundreds of possibilities and with modern designs and with the use of state-of-the-art tools, you can make your basement look unbelievably gorgeous that it won’t feel like it is a basement at all. I can’t blame those people who are willing to spend thousands of dollars to make their basement fully functional. It’s very much worth the money because like I always say, it’s an investment rather than expense.

If you have no idea what you will use your basement for, here are a couple of helpful finish basement ideas that you might consider:

Basement Office Space- With the economy not doing so well these days, it’s not wise to keep on paying expensive rental expenses when you can use a room in your house to do all your work. If you have a basement, consider yourself lucky because you can convert it into an office space. What’s good about this idea is that you have the advantage of separating the office from other rooms in your house like the family room. This is a good way to separate work from family time because when you’re in the basement, you feel that you are entirely in a different place so it means you don’t associate it with your home. The quiet and serene nature of the basement is ideal for a work space.

Basement Gym- We often encounter the dilemma of having enough space in the house to make way for huge and heavy exercise equipment. If you only use your basement as a storage area, why don’t you convert it into something useful? Something that will help eliminate your problems with not having too much space for you to exercise. The basement is an isolated room which can be good to house all your gym equipment.

Basement Bathroom - If you have a typically small house and you only have one bathroom but you have an empty space in the basement then you might as well have another bathroom. A bathroom can easily be set up in the basement because you already have the pipes, it won’t require a lot of work anymore. You can have a very spacious bathroom down in your basement, go ahead and add a bathtub apart from your regular shower room.

These 3 are just some of the finish basement ideas that you can look into. There are more ideas out there, you just have to click and read.

Minimize your Basement Finishing System Cost

Finishing your basement is the best possible way to increase valuable living space in your home. Before embarking on a project, most of us will consider how much will be the basement finishing system cost. We always hear that the average cost runs from $15,000 to $35,000. I really do not want to call this as an expense but rather an investment.

Reports show that even with poor housing market in 2007, home value increased to 60.8% to 96.8% of the price of the installation. This means that home improvement will let you earn more than what you paid for. However, if you are on a tight budget, it’s wise to think of some ways how to minimize your basement finishing system cost.

One of the things you can do to help you save money is to do the prep work yourself. Most of the work load in remodeling is the tearing down and scraping away of the old stuff or materials. Do as much as you can like tearing down old paneling or lifting up carpeting or linoleum. Also, make sure you clean up all the mess before you start with your basement finishing project. Scrub away old glue, pull out nails and sand any wood. These are things you can easily do on your own. Brushes, bleach and other heavy-duty cleaners come in handy when making the basement clean and prepped. Remove all clutter and get rid of the things you don’t need. A garage sale is a great idea, you can use the funds to increase your budget.

Another way to minimize basement finishing system cost is to paint your walls with waterproof primer instead of paying somebody to do it for you. Waterproofing the interior basement is not that difficult. You just have to know what to buy and it will really help if you will read self-help guides which are available over the internet.

If you want to have future savings on electricity, you can design your basement windows to be compatible with other purposes. A window is used for ventilation and its opening should not only allow more air to come in but more light as well. This will prevent you from turning all the lights on at the basement during daytime. In addition to that, the window can also serve as an alternative escape in case there’s fire.

DIY Basement Remodeling – Do It Yourself Basement Remodeling Guide

Planning a do-it-yourself basement remodeling project? Want to add a family room, basement bar, or entertainment room to your basement? Perhaps an additional bedroom in your basement? Take time to read these 5 tips for the best results on your DIY basement remodeling.

The Do it Yourself Basement Remodeling Guide

There are certain basic thing to remember when you plan to do a do it yourself basement remodeling. It is good to remodel your basement according to how it is going to be used. It will also allow you to enhance the appearance of the basement itself.

1. What are you going to use the basement for?

Planning for a do it yourself basement remodeling, should always begin with deciding what you are going to turn the basement into. Is it going to be a play room for the kids or a wine cellar? Will you be adding a bathroom or a fire place?

2. Fix any existing problems.

Existing problems in your basement should be remedied at this point. Make sure that your basement is free from leaks. Check the walls and the foundation for any cracks or holes. Make sure that you seal the cracks and fill in the holes properly. If not, all your hard work will be destroyed by water or moisture that leaks in. The foundation should also be in top shape. Make sure that it is not bowed.

3. Make sure that the basement is insulated and well heated.

Check the existing furnace if it is able to heat the basement efficiently. If not, you should probably consider replacing it or adding another one. Insulating your walls will also help in keeping the basement warm. Some companies offer electric floor heating that will not only keep the room warmer but will also fight off the growth of mold and mildew. You may also add a fire place to help in maintaining a warm room temperature but make sure that it is compatible with how your basement is going to be utilized.

4. Design your basement.

Design your basement according to its use. If it will be a recreational room, bring down that home-theater system. If you will use it as a workshop, put shelves and cabinets to store your tools. A painting studio will definitely need natural light. Add windows. For a kids play room, choose bright colors and make sure that the room is kid-friendly. The visual design of your basement will depend on your personal style.

5. Don’t forget the lights.

Adding windows to a basement that is partially above ground is a good way to let natural light in. Regardless of having basement windows or not, it is important that you also put artificial lights in your basement. Strategically place the lights around the room. Choose from different kinds and sizes of lights that match your basement design.

These do it yourself basement remodeling tips will definitely turn any dark and old basement into a bright and lively room that is going to add another exceptional room to your home.

Basement Remodeling Pricing, Cost Estimates and Research

Transforming an undecorated basement into a stylish living space is not as difficult as some may think. In fact, with a few inexpensive interior designs techniques, you can have your basements shining in no time. However, be sure to make all necessary repairs to existing problem areas (insulation, drywall, waterproofing) before tackling the interior design.

Basement Lighting

The first area of design that you want to focus on with a basement is the lighting scheme. Most basements are known for being dark, gloomy environments. Unless you plan to turn your basement into a movie theater or photography studio, light is the way to liven up the atmosphere. Certain basements are equipped with windows to the outside. Taking this natural light and letting as much of it in as possible is a great start. Use simple window treatments instead of treatments that block out light.

If natural light isn’t available in your basement, using artificial light is also a wonderful way to open up the room. Placing lights on the ceiling will create the illusion that the room is larger and more open. To keep a warm setting in your basement, consider using floor and table lights.

Finishing Your Basement

Aside from lighting, bringing color to your basement will definitely bring it back to life. You want to be sure to stay away from dull, boring colors. The best way to make your basement look inviting is to integrate bright, dramatic colors. Some ideas include blue, green, yellow, red, orange, and purple. For the best coloring scheme, you may want to hire an interior decorator that can take your favorite colors and use unique design techniques to compliment your style.

Last but not least, you want to accessorize! The basement can be made to feel like a comfortable, safe haven. Take that comfort and security and use it to your utmost benefit by incorporating your favorite things. Maybe music and movies are your cherished past times. If so, bring that entertainment system downstairs. Perhaps your family enjoys game nights, or you have children that need a play room. Try adding a pool table, card table, or miniature kid kingdom!

This is also the time to decorate walls with your favorite artwork and accessorize tables with loved pictures and collectibles. Also, try making a clear distinction between the areas of the basement where you will be entertaining, and the area where you will be storing your belongings. Separate storage rooms, closets and shelves are recommended for optimal use of space.

10 Remodeling Tips – Read This BEFORE You Remodel

10 Things to Know and Understand Before Beginning a Renovation

Read below to find out, how to choose the right person for the right job, negotiate your terms to ensure everyone is accountable and happy with the end result

#1 KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

As the client bring in trades/service providers to see and assess. It is important that much thought has been given. Spend some time thinking of basic goals. Fundamental MUST -HAVES, a wish list. If you are unable to translate your desires, hiring a designer, is a perfect way to help map out your thoughts. Bring in a few; I’m certain you will find the ideas will be priceless to your bottom line. They understand the fundamentals of building principles they can usually easily characterize what, will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Frequently clients struggle with bringing in yet another decision maker. However, an unbiased third party is a great way to redefine, the goals while factoring in timelines and budgets in conjunction with each other. Also another set of fresh eyes, can never hurt. Professionals in the business see things quite differently. ENJOY and EXPLORE!!

#2 TENDER THE PROJECT

The world of quoting…a book should be written on the art of understanding this alone. All I will say here is CLEARLY define the scope of work to ensure all bids are created equal. Understand what modification costs will be, are they time and materials? RE quotes? Just a word to the wise; there are ALWAYS adjustments. NO matter how well planned. If you know this in advance, it will help mentally prepare you for the months ahead. I cannot stress enough the importance of PRE PLANNING!!

#3 PRE-PLANNING

Organize your thoughts. Make lists. Rank your top priorities and pencil in your thoughts and the cost associated with that item. Do a rough budget, a Budget, not what you would like to spend. What amount of money you feel fairly warrants the cost of that item and or task? Do you see value in changing all of your light fixtures? If so what amount of money do you deem a suitable investment? Then do a bit of research online or browsing at stores what type of fixtures you like. Is that number attainable? If not, is this an area you are willing to sacrifice? In order of importance where did lighting fixtures rank? Interestingly enough this is the process, which is done pertaining to various goods within the project lifecycle Professionals in the industry can ballpark to a degree, having background knowledge of brand specifics, as well as vast resources to pool from. Often bargain prices come with bargain service. It tends to be the sacrificial lamb. Stores cannot maintain high level staff when the pricing is based on low margins. I’m sure you are well aware that you can buy an item at a particular store and it is more expensive somewhere else. However their customer service is second to none. Is it worth it to pay more for less aggravation? This is yet another question two people often do not answer the same. It comes back to your relationship with money and the value you place on service.

#4 RESEARCH

Yet another important tool in renovation work, understand the project. As well as the skill set of each individual brought to the table. Often professionals can save you time and money, by narrowing down the enormous field of choices. I can walk into a space and immediately deem a list based on what stands out, and is screaming to be addressed. Often clients tend to focus on the small stuff. It is the larger impact items that are going to make the project feel vibrant and as though great strides have been made. Trust me when the visual items are modified. The little items will be lost in order of priority.

#5 TRUST

Interview people, ensure a fit. A relationship need to blossom here. Everyone likes to work with people we like. If you can, bring in a few consultants. Do they “HEAR” what you are saying? Do you trust they understand your needs/wants/desires? Back away from anyone who is all about money, purchasing, and or large deposits? Trust me the chq writing will soon follow, but in the meantime a strong emphasis on PRE planning will help, the loss of funds by making haste selections and decrease the amount of mistakes. The idea here is about strategy. There is lots of time to spend. Again we need to plan the purchases so your money works for you. This way if you outline some rough costs you can see in black white where you have an ability to bump up or scale back, in certain areas.

#6 SET BOUNDARIES

Set realistic parameters, to ensure everyone understands. If you wish that trades keep the hours worked within timelines, this is something that needs to be addressed. If you do not want subs, in on the weekends, it is important to point that out. What time line have you set out for the execution of the scope of work? Is it realistic? Do you realize if labor is added and or changes are made this effects the dates of execution. Is that ok with you? Could this be a phase 2 component? Lots to think about….

#7 STRATEGIES

Important to communicate how you like to work. Are you busy professional who only want s the communication of the bigger picture? Do you want constant updating relevant to all details? Are you a spreadsheet junkie? Do you need to be within Budget? Is the budget a starting point, d/t a lack of experience and a unclear understanding of the costs of goods required? If yes, no problem, again this is where a professional works with you to outline. How this project can best be tailored to your comfort level. This will be stressful, things will go wrong. Embrace the fact that when one door closes, another opens. As a matter of fact some of the best design concepts have been manufactured vicariously through a problem. Pandora’s box- once opened we are all in uncharted territory embrace it! This is where some assistance can guide you through pivotal, solutions. To end up at the same fantastic end result!!

#8 CONTRACTS

Know what you’re agreeing to. Modify as needed, be careful here. A contract is meant to be a document that binds both parties accountable to what was agreed. If changes are made the contract should reflect this. Often this type of work rushes by, so much work and or changes is being completed somewhat on the fly. One piece of advice, conversations get forgotten. People make mistakes. Lots is talked about daily, it is difficult to remember where you left off. I prefer to work with a recap email outlining/ regurgitating what was discussed. So everyone is clear. Keep in mind the trades are likely on six other sites. They do have a tendency to blur together. If high communications are expected, communicate this upfront so, the company can adjust and or increase the staff required to update as per your requests. Many trades are sole proprietors, have difficulty with the administrative side of the business. If they know this is an expectation, arrangements can and will be made. Perhaps it can be via daily progress calls to the designer, so we could send out recaps/questions etc. via email? You decide, be as upfront as you can with your comfort level. I know I’m a control Freak I can admit it. I work better being kept in the loop; this gives me peace of mind just hearing the back and for the communication so I know its being handled.

#9 THE BIGGER PICTURE

Are you a visual person? Is a drawing necessary to visualize the concepts if so, this can be a valuable investment. As with any service there are costs associated with this, however it saves hours of miscommunication and costly mistakes a Picture/rendering can literally be worth its weight in gold. Again only you are familiar with you, the more upfront you are re your ability or inability to see things. The clearer all can be sorted out. Customizing an approach is the key to success. You should love the process as much

#10 WHEN TO START

Are you sitting? Begin the “process” a year in advance. This is just the beginning, clip pictures out of magazines. Prepare yourself to a level of comfort and knowledge so you can begin having people come in to assess, and walk you through the steps. Understand that Quality companies are in demand, most have a waiting list. This is not a service to be rushed through. Good decisions take time and strategic planning, prior to implementation. Roughly map out a critical path on a calendar. January- thinking about project goals defines each look/feel of spaces. Find a great designer or a few, book appointments, to review space and chat about base project concepts. Are seeing where I’m going here. A typical Reno, takes six months to plan and however many months to execute, based on those decisions. Always better to underestimate and over deliver..

NOW ENJOY the fruits of your labors. Reno work is a tricky undertaking. You will learn from this experience. Hindsight after all is 20/20. Live vicariously through others who have traveled this road before you and the many that will follow afterwards. I was inspired to write this article as I had just recently read an article, in style at home by Kimberly Seldon, called design etiquette. Being in the business this long you tend to forget how many steps it takes to manufacture a simple pillow. You will soon see how many steps it takes to facilitate a job of this magnitude. As they say it takes a VILLAGE, and it really does.

When you already know what you should consider to estimate your basement finish cost, the next step is to get the price for your particular project. There are a couple of easy ways to get a good estimate before you commit to your project.

Online Estimators

You can do nearly anything in the internet these days. That includes getting price estimates specifically for basement finishing. Many online estimators are part of contractor websites. Some of these websites however offer the service for free so you don’t have to worry about being billed for using their estimator tool. You do have to make sure though that the estimator that you use takes into consideration the region or state where you live. Prices may vary depending on the state.

Price Comparisons

Online estimators are a convenient tool to use but they may not always be close to accurate. A better way to get your basement finish cost would be to go straight to online contractor websites. You can easily find one in your region using a search engine. You can open a few contractor sites so you can compare the services they offer. You can then send a request for a quote with your specifications on your request. If you want a free quote, make sure you check first if a contractor gives quotes for free.

Ask for Recommendations

Nothing can beat asking other people for recommendations. You might have been to a friend’s home with a good basement in which case you can simply ask for a price estimate and the name of the contractor. If you do not know anyone who has recently remodeled their basement, you can opt to ask online. There are many forums and message boards where you can ask about basement costs.

Do Part of the Work

You will find it easier to arrive at a basement finish cost estimate if you only had to ask for the price of contractor service. You can get a fairly stable estimate if you just want the cost of labor. You can do this by canvassing the prices of materials yourself. You can inform a potential contractor that you have already set the design and materials and that you need a price for labor only. This is the best way to get the best possible price estimate.

Successful basement remodeling ideas start with a good budget. Begin yours by setting the right basement finish cost. Find out how to do it.
