More horsepower and better fuel economy is just an oil change away. For numerous reasons different oils produce different engine performance. Watch out! You don’t want to accidentally damage your engine by using the wrong type of oil.
Have you checked out the Royal Purple website? They have a video of some dyno testing to show that their motor oil enhances horsepower at the wheels.
How does that work anyway? Try surfing the internet and you’ll come across a mob of AMSOIL dealers who claim that synthesized oil is more “slippery” because its molecules are ”uniform”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a bit far-fetched in my book.
Well, it isn’t that simple folks…the additive package and viscosity play a big role as to whether the oil allows more horsepower or not; tribology is more complicated than “uniform” molecules making oil more “slippery”.
I do agree oils can be formulated to provide the best lubricity but I don’t think it is as easy as the explanation of uniform molecule length.
Having said that, the simplest way to get that killer horsepower would be to use a lighter weight oil in the motor and through the entire drive train (differentials etc.). I am not recommending this! I wanted to bring it to your attention since the automotive companies had to get creative to boost gas mileage.
Oil companies have a way of placing the viscosity at the lower end of the spectrum to create the lightest oil possible and yet it will still fall in its designated category, such as 5W 30, for example. Sounds pretty devious.
A lot of auto companies have switched to 5W 20 in the past 5 years, and why do you suppose that is? If you guessed CAFE standards in the US then you are probably right. The quickest way to get that awesome fuel economy is to tweak the engine design so it can use a lighter weight oil and reduce engine losses with less oil resistance in the engine.
The big question is whether or not motor oil can significantly improve engine output and engine performance. If you said yes…you’re right again. Are the reasons for this simple? No. Does somebody have some proof? Yes. Check it out for yourself and get your motor oil testing report right here.
